Beha
Surname DNA Project

The BEHA DNA Surname Project in conjunction with
the extensive genealogical research resources of the Robert Beha Noles genealogical database will help determine (and prove)
which of the many BEHA families in the U.S. and Germany (primarily the Black
Forest Region) are descendants of a common German (or other world location) BEHA ancestor.
Surname genetic testing is the newest tool available to
genealogists. The genetic genealogy tests verify a
man’s direct paternal ancestry in a quick and easy way. These tests save time,
prevent mistakes and provide invaluable data for genealogists that can not be
otherwise obtained.
The BEHA Surname DNA Project is open to all persons with the
BEHA surname (all spellings) world-wide. This project is also open to
anyone who believes they are (or could be) a direct male descendant of one of
the BEHA families, even if their surname is not BEHA. This project is
primarily a Y-Chromosome study (direct paternal line); however, those (men or
women) interested the in mitochondrial DNA testing (direct maternal line) may
join this project as well.
Membership in the Knowles/Knoles/Noles Family
Association
is not required
to join the BEHA Surname DNA Project.
Many surnames were changed during the 18th, 19th and early 20th
centuries due to adoptions, out-of-wedlock births, family disagreements, etc.
Under these circumstances, the Y-DNA for many descendants may not match other
descendants with the same surname. Therefore, this project will assist
BEHA
researchers on common or related families to work together to find their correct
common ancestors, when that hasn’t been possible via the examination of the
traditional paperwork trail.
You are hereby cordially invited to participate in this historic
project. BEHA family members requesting participation are requested to
supply Robert B. Noles with their known genealogy.

SURNAME
ORIGINS *
BEHA
(100) - German: One
of many variants of BOEHM.
BOEHM
(4,590) - German (Böhm),
Dutch, and Jewish (Ashkenazic); ethic name for a native or
inhabitant of Bohemia (now the western part of the Czech Republic),
from Böhmen, German name for Bohemia. This derives its name
from the tribal name Baii + heim 'homeland'; the Baii were a
tribe, probably Celtic, who inhabited the region in the 1st century
AD and were gradually displaced by Slavic settlers in the period up
to the 5th century. The same tribe also gave their name to
Bavaria. Bohemia was an independent Slavic kingdom from the
7th century to 1526, when it fell to the Habsburgs. In 1627 it
was formally declared a Habsburg Crown Land and by the Treaty of
Versailles it became a province of the newly formed Czechoslovakia
in 1919. Boehm is also found as a Swedish name.
